Define target organisms
Vegetative bacteria, bacterial spores, yeasts and moulds respond differently. A result for one organism cannot be extrapolated to all contaminants. Targets should reflect risk and applicable standards.

SCIENTIFIC BRIEF 03
From microbiological objectives to biological indicators: understanding experimental evidence.

Vegetative bacteria, bacterial spores, yeasts and moulds respond differently. A result for one organism cannot be extrapolated to all contaminants. Targets should reflect risk and applicable standards.
Biological indicators are placed where exposure may be lowest: obstructions, peripheral zones, shielded geometry or critical surfaces. Document the rationale before testing.
A 6-log10 reduction represents a factor of 10⁶ for the tested organism and protocol. It is neither a universal guarantee nor proof that all organisms are absent. Results depend on inoculum, carrier, exposure and recovery method.
Representative repeated tests help document normal variability. Validation considers worst cases and critical parameters including flow, concentration, humidity, temperature, duration and aeration.
